Audience Feedback;

This word cloud piece from wordle, shows a few things that people said about our thriller.

Evaluation 7; Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the product?

When looking back at our preliminary task then watching our finished thriller beginning, I can see that we have made major improvements. I feel that we have made improvements in all areas of the products.

Sound;
In our preliminary task we had a lot of unwanted sound/noises. For example one of the people in the crowd we used was saying something about what he was doing in this piece, and we did not want any other sound than footsteps, however at this point of the course we did not know all the things that we were able to do on the final cut express program. However in our thriller we knew more about final cut express and its abilities so we were able to get rid of any unwanted sound. Also our thriller seems more professional as it contains a soundtrack.

Continuity;
We have had problems with continuity in both the prelim. task and our thriller. However our preliminary tasks continuity error could have been sorted if we had thought more into it and possibly chose a different clip that we had shot, so it ran more smoothly. However in our thriller it is only a small error where we had to attempt to make the clip we had shorter as it was rather boring when the full lengthed version. But as of her head being in a slightly different position to the end of where it was last cut we were unable to do anything about it.
The following images are the shots which show our continuity errors;
In our preliminary task, although we have used different shots the actress is in different positions.
In Our thriller we used the same shot but when editing her head was in different positions to what we were hoping for.

Shots;
We used many different types of shots in our thriller compared to our preliminary task. Although we used a small range of different shots in our preliminary task we used a larger range of interesting shots in our thriller, such as placing the camera on the floor and allowing our actress to walk over it, or having the actress looking into the camera as if it was her mirror. I think using shots like these makes the thriller seem more interesting as it is creative and gives the audience something a bit more to imagine other than just watching usual midshots, which is what our preliminary task mainly had.

Transitions;
In our preliminary task we had no transitions which shows automatically what we learnt during the time of making our thriller. We included in our film, fades and dissolves which were the main video transitions, we also created a sound bridge linking one clip to another.

Effects;
We used effects on the beginning of our thriller opening to make the imagary seem older than the rest of the film, which is another thing that we had learned as no effects were used in the preliminary exercise. We did this by changing the brightness and contrast of each clip.

Titles and Ident;
In the preliminary task we had no titles and no production company ident. These were used in our thriller opening making it look more professional. We overlayed the titles over the footage which also made it seem as if it was professional.

The following is the two finished products;

Evaluation 6; What have you learnt about the technologies from the processes

When doing this media project I was introduced to many new and different technologies and equipment that I was not used to.
The technologies I used were;

Still Camera;
In order to take pictures of our storyboards, to be able to create an animatic.

Video Camera;
To film our thriller beginning and be able to transfer onto the computers and process on Final Cut Express.

Imac Computers;
Provided us with the services needed to make our film turn out how it did.

Tripod;
helped with the stability of the camera whist filming and the smooth movements of the camera, such as a pan shot.
Mobile Phone; This has been used to take pictures when a still camera has not been near, which can then blutooth the image to the imac computer.
I also used different Computer programs. Such as; Blogger,YouTube, Garageband, Final Cut Express, Livetype, Survey Monkey, One True Media, Wordle Etc.

Blogger has been used to record my progress through the makings of our project and research into the project as you can see. We Used Youtube to show our filmed pieces to whoever wants to view them around the world, such as our film, premliminary exercise and Voxpop. Garageband was used to create a soundtrack for our ident however as there was problems with the computer we were unable to use it. We used Final Cut Express to create our film, including transitions and effects. LiveType was used in order to create our production company ident and title of our film. We used Survey Monkey to make a survey and post on facebook, to recieve information in order to help our research. One True media has been used to show a series of images during my evaluation. Finally wordle has been used to show a series of words in a different format than usual, i have used this druing my evaluation.

Evaluation 5; How did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted our audience in many different ways to watch the rest of our film.  Firstly we used the results from our surveys and Vox pops to create a thriller beginning that fitted the critea shown popular. This helped attract our audience and give them what they are more likely wanting to want to watch.

We also attracted our audience by leaving mystery, and suspence, in many places of our thriller beginning. Such as; who tied her up? where is she tied up? and who is about to come through the door? This leave the audience want to watch more as it is filled with mystery and they want to find out the answers.

We also addressed our audience by using young actors, as our target audience is young adults we thought that the audience may feel that they can relate to the characters/ actors.

Evaluation 4; who would be the audience for you media product?

Previously My partner and I made surveys using survey monkey. After creating these surveys we posted them on facebook to gather information. One of the questions on our surveys was; what age group do you fit into. This is the following results;

As the results show the majority of people are at a young age, between teenage and early twenties. However we also asked what type of thriller they liked. The results are the following;

And as these results show the most liked thriller genre is a psycological thriller, therefore this is why we chose to create a psycological thriller.
Therefore our aimed audience is young adults who like to watch psycological thrillers.

Also as earlier shown on my blog we carried out some interviews as a vox pop as part of our audience research, the overall opinions were as follows;

The audience would watch our film as we have produced it to fit with their age group and the research carried out to find the best results.

Evaluation 3; What kind of media Institution might distribute your media project and why?

There are many different media institutions which may distribute our film. Below is a montage of different institutions that could do this;

Our film could be seen in different ways. Such as; cinema, dvd/television, and internet. But before people watch it, it needs to be advertised. It can be advertised on things like; Buses, billboards, bus stops, television, before another film at a cinema, banners on internet sites, and interviews of the characters on a chat show.

The following image is a poster that we made advertising our film.

Evaluation 2; How Does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our thriller represents a few different sectors of social groups.
Firstly it represents both genders in there sexuality as a couple. It also shows young people, in a slight aspect,such as how they dress casually and for parties. I think that our thriller shows no stereotypes towards the characters, such as a 'stalker/scary hoodie'. We do not have any reference to ethnicity in our beginning of a thriller. Therefore there is no ethnic minority or form of ethnic abuse shown.

I think that our thriller represents middle class people, as they just seem like normal people that have gone for a walk around the park with their partner.
I feel that our Thriller is suitable for teenagers, above the age of 15 and adults.

Evaluation 1; In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We used, developed and challenged the different thriller conventions in different ways. We did that in which to try and make our thriller interesting.
This is a screenshot of a piece of our video. We based this part on another Thriller called 'Harry Brown'. The image above is a screenshot of the clip we were inspired by. This is the subway scene where Harry has tied up a person from the gang that killed his friend to warn the others in the gang what he is capable of. Both of these characters are victims, meaning that they are protaganists of the story.

The Setting of our tied up scenes was set in a dark room, this dark room was a drama room, which provided lights to place spotlight our character and give more of a secluded effect. We also placed many pictures of our character behind her, to give the desired effect of obsession.

We used music to create tension at the beginning as it was a slow spacious chime sound, making you wonder what is going to happen as it is as if it is a bomb/timer waiting to go off. I think that this could be parallel to the film or contrapuntal, depending on how you look at it and what clip it may be.

We attempted creating some graphic matches, as that was our plan at the beginning as the anamatic of our storyboard shows. However we did not use as many, I feel that the main graphic match that we have is not as good as it possibly could have been as of the transition and the positioning of the character.

when Filming and Editing;

  • Getting the camera to move smoothly can be difficult when filming. My Partner Georgia and I have came across this problem a few times. However we are able to get rid of this during the editing stage.
  • When trying to make a graphic match, it can be very difficult as you need to get the camera in the same position as the other shot and the object(s) in the same place.
  • When filming Georgia and I thought about everything that was going to be in the frame. (mis-en-scene) We made sure that everything fitted with the atmosphere that we wanted to portray.
  • when editing we used many types of effects/shots and transitions. We created jump cuts, fades and dissolves. We also created sound effects such as sound bridges and the sound fading.
  • In our thriller we used a sound bridge, to carry the sound from the door opening shot to the main character turning round whilst tied up.
  • The following pictures are screenshots of the editing stage, the first image is a shot of our sound bridge.

Last pieces of filming;

The next bit of Filming we carried out was a party scene, where we filmed the phone of a friend of the main character. This was difficult to film, as we tried to capture what was on the screen of the phone. However the light of the room that we filmed in was reflected on the screen.

Finally we filmed our last bit of the thriller. We originally did not plan this however looking through our film we thought that the main actress needed something to be looking at. Therefore we filmed a door opening in a dark room.

More filming;

The past two days we have filmed some more of our thriller. Firstly we went to hainault to film our actress walking through the forrest. This was rather difficult to organise as we had to find somewhere that our actress could get changed. This part was also difficult to film and edit as we had to film her crossing the road. This was difficult because we had to make sure she wasn't standing and waiting for too long and that the cars matched in each clip when editing. As it was not possible for her to cross both roads smoothly we created some jump cuts.

Two days later we filmed the actor burning a picture of the actress. This was rather difficult as we only had a few chances to get it right because we only printed off three pictures. The first two times took a while for the picture to set alight as we began to burn it in the corners. After these two tries we felt that we should try burning from the middle of the picture with a lighter and not a match so there is more likely to be a larger flame.

More Filming;

On monday we carried out some more filming, this was the section of our film when our actress is getting ready for a party. We filmed it at her house so it was more natural for the actress, as she knows where things are and she is used to getting ready there in the comfort of her own home.

Filming!

Georgia and I carried out our first piece of filming the other day, as we were in school we thought we would use the drama room and its facilities to film a certain scene. In the drama room we were able to use the right lighting to give the edgy effect we wanted.
We also filmed during the weekend, our beginning part that will be joint with the titles.

A few days later we went to the chase by central park to film our actor and actress together as a 'couple'. This part of our film is the past before she has been tied up. This wasn't too difficult to film. We ranged with different shots like a panning shot.

Moby Gratis Approval;

We received an email back from Moby gratis and they approved for us to use the two pieces of music.

Name of our Thriller;

When first deciding on our name for the thriller, we were thinking of a name to do with revenge, e.g. sweetest revenge. However we began to think of the story line and Georgia suggested the name 'love hurts' as he wants to seek revenge on the one he loves but she no longer love him back.
Our final decision was to call it 'You're Mine'.

Moby Gratis;

Today my partner Georgia and I requested two songs for our Thriller on mobygratis.com. One of these songs seemed to fit the whole of our video, and the other song sounded as if it would fit credits well. We are now waiting for the confirmation of the licence.

Our Ident;

This video is the final idea of our Ident, as we were unable to load the garage band music onto it we uploaded it to YouTube and used a piece of music that YouTube provided.

location research;

 The following images are of a location that we are going to use for our thriller;

Soviet Montage;

Soviet montage is when two different images/ clips are shown when they have no link whatsoever, but as they are shown together between eachother it makes the audience link the two things together and decide what has just happened.
A great example of this is in Hitchcock's Psyco. Which shows clips of the main character screeming in the shower and clips of the knife but no clips of her being stabbed by the knife but the audience figure out themselves that she is being stabbed.

Organisation of the group;

As there is only two people in our group it is very simple to keep in organisation with each other, the hardest bit was to organise times with the actors, as they are not always free.

Garageband;

This is a screenshot of when we used garageband to create our background music for our Ident. We created this with different tunes/melodies that were given by garageband, we also used different instruments to create a better piece of music.

Livetype;

This image is a screenshot of our ident on livetype. We added a background, Production company name, and an animation for the name. However we are in need of background music that we will make using garageband.

Photoshop;

This image is a screen shot of attempting our robot on photoshop. However this came with great difficulty as my partner and I both have not had a lot of experience with photoshop. As of this we left our photoshop robot and made two images at home with the paint accessory on a windows computer.

making our Ident;

We had many ideas for our Production company's Ident. Firstly we thought of filming a cat (pet) meowing, and putting it into something like a ring, which is alike to MGM's (Metro Goldwyn Mayer) roaring lion.

However we felt that this was too complicated for the time in which we have. Following from this we thought of creating our own icon on photoshop, we decided on a robot. After halfway through making this robot we thought that we could have the robot doing a robot dance. So we made two images of a robot in different positions, and put them together using final cut express. This was the following outcome;
We decided that it just didn't look right and wanted to have the clips pass by quicker. This however did not seem possible therefore we decided to leave this idea and come up with a much simpler piece using LiveType.

Graphic Match;

In our thriller, we have decided to add quite a few graphic matches, to change from one clip to another. A graphic match is something that links two clips together by a object in each clip resembling eachother in shape and size. It seems as if the objects merge into each other. This keeps a smoothly running transition.

The following image is and example of a graphic match. The objects that resemble as you should see are the bone and the space station.

Lighting experiments;

The following image shows are experiment of low and under lighting;

This image may be useful experiments for our thriller as it does not give away alot of identity and give a spooky effect.

Panic Room;

The title sequence of Panic room i feel stands out. I think this because the font of the names are big and bold giving the names more attention. Another thing that draws more attention to the names is the simple background shots, which are long shots of the city in which the film is set. Finally this title sequence stands out as the backing track is deep and solumn to begin with and gradually gets faster with an added ticking noise, giving tension and suspence.

Se7en

Seven.jpeg
I think that the title sequence for se7en is also very effective, for many reasons. Firstly the background music seems very chilling and spine tingling. It also shows the names in a font that seems to be 'scratched in', giving more of an thrilling effect. Finally i feel that the footage it is showing has somewhat of a creepy effect to it as it shows some sort of planning of a crime or a series of crimes.
